About Us: Gale River Traders was established in the early 1980’s in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We started out buying, selling, and trading at the large & frequent gun shows Colorado was known for back then. After relocating to New Hampshire in 1995, we established our online business, specializing in vintage gun parts, militaria, accoutrements, and related ephemera. Our goal is to provide you with quality items at reasonable prices, and moreover, to help you find that elusive part that restores your gun, or that scarce item to enhance your collection. In addition to selling, we are always open to buying & trading, and reasonable offers are always considered! Thanks for looking! Ken Gale River Traders
Antique Hand Scrimshawed Sperm Whale Tooth - Wolf's Head w/ Ornate Border - Exceptional Work!
Description: Offered for your consideration is an antique hand-scrimshawed sperm whale tooth, finely engraved with a forward-facing wolf portrait, set within an ornate foliate cartouche. The artist used traditional incised line techniques with inked engraving, displaying varied line depth and controlled cross-hatching characteristics, consistent with hand work. The reverse left surface exhibits natural patina and age-appropriate surface wear. The tooth has a rich honey-brown oxidation, minor age fissures, and a visible pulp cavity on the base, consistent with authentic sperm whale teeth. The subject matter and stylistic execution are consistent with late 19th to early 20th century decorative scrimshaw, produced during the post-whaling era when scrimshaw transitioned from shipboard folk art to collectible studio work. Height: approximately 6½ inches. Condition: Very good, with expected age wear; no evidence of modern alteration. Antique Ivory Compliance Statement (U.S.) This object is an authentic sperm whale tooth scrimshawed by hand and dating to circa 1880–1920. Based on its age, materials, construction, and technique, it qualifies for the U.S. federal Endangered Species Act “Antique Exception”, defined as an item over 100 years old composed in whole or in part of ivory and not repaired or modified with modern ivory. This item is offered for sale within the United States only and will not be exported. Sale is subject to applicable state laws, and transactions will be restricted to jurisdictions permitting the sale of antique ivory. Shipping & Other Details: FREE domestic shipping via economy ground services. Expedited shipping and insurance available at cost. Please ask any questions you may have before purchase, and I would be glad to answer them. Gale River Traders has been selling online for more than 30 years with a stellar satisfaction rating, so buy with confidence! SOLD |
