Mounted Weapons Display Board
Description: Mounted Weapons Display Board consisting of 10 pieces. Pith pipe tomahawks, war axes and knives. May or may not have been Native made but are representative of the style and period. Board 48” x 52”. 1. Southern Plains style war tomahawk in the style of the Comanche in Northern Texas. Very large and heavy. Head is forged iron with a pewter inlaid star in the center of the blade and a hand stippled endcap with 4 brass tacks. The haft is adorned with a stained wrap of rawhide leather, brass tacks and extensive hot file branding. The bottom end has a staircase serrated cut tip. There is a 48” long horsetail drop tied into the hand with Crenshaw twine and 2 hawk bells. Complete horsetail drops were common on Pawnee and Comanche tomahawks. Tomahawk 26”L. 2. 1880s style cast iron eastern Plains – wester Great Lakes pipe tomahawk in the style of the Chippewa and Ojibwa. Features a cast iron head and an elaborately hand carved haft with figures of a snake, turtle, and under water panther. The under water panther is documented in easter Plains/Wester Great Lakes symbols. Head 7 ½”L overall 18”. 3. 1880s style Persian war axe with original hard wood handle. Hand forged steel bland adorned in typical early middle eastern fashion with piercings in the blade and rocker engraving. Brass inserts in the blade and top of the eye hole, adding to the art appeal. Blade 6 ½”L x 6”W overall 16 ¼”L. 4. 1870s style Lakota Sioux Missouri war tomahawk with hand forged iron blade. Head made of forged sheet iron and features five pierced “bleeder” holes in the center of the blade. The hickory haft has a nice shiny patina and is adorned with a drop of five old turkey feathers tied on. The head is held in place by a buckskin gasket and brass tacks at the top. Head 8” x 5”W . 5. 1880s style Northern Plains war tomahawk in the style of the Plains Cree. Features a rare style of fancy blade cutouts which appear to be a variation of the double batwing style piercings, and two hand drilled circular piercings. The head is made forged iron. There is file and punch circle decorations on the molding, and each side of the eye hole, as well as the lip of the pipe bowl and forward edge of the blade. The haft is elaborately notch cut on the underside, top of the head and at the smoking tip. The haft is made of ash wood with black paint and brass tacks. The cleanout plug is still intact at the top of the haft. There is a beaded hair lock attached to an old trade mirror with turkey feather stems that measure 18”L. The hair is jet black in color and braided in the style of the Sioux or Cheyenne and is likely from one of these two tribes. Head 10” overall 22”L 6. 1850s style spike tomahawk with carved twisted stem in black, red and green with pewter inlay mouthpiece. Head 8” stem 25”. 7. 1780-1800 style spike tomahawk in the style of the Mohawk Indians of upper New York state. Elaborate hand engraving and reverse weeping heart cutout in the blade. The blade is forged from iron. The haft has several splits from cracks. These types of Northeastern Woodland Indian war tomahawks are called “belly rippers” spike tomahawks because of the reverse facing, curved spike protrusion. Blade 8 ¼” overall 19”. 8. 1860-1870 style Missouri war axe style tomahawk with a hand forged iron blade. The blade ha no piercings or decoration. The haft is elaborately decorated with old red trade cloth, tin cone drops with human hair, a wrap of otter fur and old brass tacks. In typical early styles of Missouri War Axes, the butt end has a serrated “staircase” cut. 9. 19th Century long trade knife with inlaid lead wood handle. 15”L 10. Antler handled knife made from file. Maker’s mark unknown. Contemporary. 7” closed, 11” extended.
