South American Conquistador Stirrups
Description: Pair of gold/brass colored "Conquistador" horse stirrups. Conquistador implies they were taken to South America when it was first colonized by the Spanish in the 16th Century. This is probably not true. In Brazilian Portuguese "conqueror" also often means charming, a gentleman willing to conquer ladies hearts. If so, this piece dates at the 19th Century. Many of these were made from melted church bells or cannon barrels. This particular pair shows significant wear, indicating that they may possibly be older than we think. Either way, they're an interesting piece of historical memorabilia great for unusual, odd and interesting collections, or for collectors of South American and Brazilian horse gear and apparel.
