Museum Quality original brain tanned elk hide Frontiersmen Shirt
Description: This is an original, antique, natural colored, Indian tanned pullover shirt. It is beautifully sewn, with welted seams throughout. Most of the straight line stitching was likely done on a hand cranked sewing machine, but the button holes and the other stitching was all done by hand. The beaded button placate is closed with the three original white milk glass buttons. This shirt was made about 1860 to 1870. It was made of native tanned Elk hide. The stitching is in good shape for the age with only a few loose stitches. Around each button hole is the hand stitching and the stitching is very close together. The three glass buttons are still well attached, but the outstanding feature is the floral bead work. Each bead is individually sew down, a very laborious and time consuming procedure. Short leather fringe is on the back of the shoulders and around the cuffs. Longer fringe festoons the single breast pockets, chest, sleeves, and sides of the body. The breast pocket is perfect for carrying a PACK O DUKES smoking tobacco. I see absolutely no significant damage of any kind. This shirt is a size 40 or 42 inch chest measurement and would fit the average Civil War Soldier of the time. This is of museum quality and certainly tells a story of the American West. Shirts of this style were often made by Indian women for Cavalry Officers during our westward expansion and can be seen in old photos of early cowboys . Only the PACK O DUKES will be included with the shirt. The other accompanying props are not included. Rare to find as these were often used up. Great for a museum, cowboy room antique gun display.
