Rare John B. Sandford
Description: Here is a Rare pair of John B. Sanford Saddlebags they are marked John B Sanford Cattletsburg Kentucky. These bags show much use repairs and ware, however the leather is mostly pliable and could be used today. There is some damage by rodents as pictured in the photo's. The bags are larger than others that I have had and deeper also, the bottom best shows the width which is 4 1/2 inches and appears to be that width all the way to the tops. As seen they have a Heart on one side and a Texas Star on the other. Someone has removed the letters below these they appear to be P. M. S. (Postal Military Service)? In 1887 when John B. Sanford was 31 years old. Sanford had already made a name for himself as a talented harness maker and advertized in publications. (Note can be seen at Ohio Vallery ANtique Mall Case 146 Cincinnati Ohio) It was not uncommon for families to have apprenticeship agreements to teach a child a trade. But it appears that John chose his occupation and his teacher, as a young adult. By 1880 John B. Sanford, age 23, is listed in the household of Jacob W. Hutchinson, on Main Street, Owingsville, Bath County Kentucky. Both Hutchinson and John are listed as saddlers. Hutchinson was an artist stitching beautiful patterns on Saddles. Sanford was a quick learner and a savvy business man. Unmarried, by 1881 Sanford had moved to bustling Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky to ply his trade of saddlery. He set up his harness business on Panola and quickly became a Deacon of the Hampton Lodge #235, an excellent way to get to know the gentleman of the county. I will ship Priority Mail and Insure. Not sure what shipping will be depends what part ot the country. I assume it will run 50.00. I accept PalPal or BankMoney orders or Bank Cashiers checks from your Bank. any questions feel free. I will give a three day inspection. If returned must be notified during the 3 day inspection Buyer pays return shipping and must insure. SOLD |
