"Katana Signed “Bizen Kuni Ju Osafune Sukesada" — Muromachi Period Blade in WWII Military Mounts (SW2010)

Description:
"This katana is signed by the renowned Sukesada line of Osafune in Bizen Province, one of Japan’s most prolific and respected swordmaking families. The blade is forged in shinogi-zukuri form with a pronounced koshi-zori and measures 24.875" (63.2 cm). The hamon is a lively gunome-midare, extending through the length of the blade into a well-formed kissaki. • Signature (mei): ????????? (Bizen Kuni Ju Osafune Sukesada Saku) • Period: Muromachi era (c. 1500s) • Nagasa (cutting edge length): 24.875" (63.2 cm) • Motohaba (width at the machi): 31.2 mm • Motokasane (thickness at the machi): 6.92 mm • Construction: Shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune, pronounced koshi-zori • Hamon: Gunome-midare • Nakago: Ubu, one mekugi-ana, mei on the omote, patina consistent with age • Mounts: WWII shin-gunto military koshirae including regulation tsuka with brown ito wrap, brass tsuba, and saya  Notes: This blade began life in the Muromachi period, signed by the Sukesada line of Osafune, and was later remounted for service during WWII. Such combinations of koto blades in gunto mounts represent the continuity of Japan’s sword tradition into the modern era.
