German Forestry Cutlass Third Reich [W. Michovius Cottbus] by Carl Eickhorn
Description: This Senior Foresters Cutlass by Eickhorn is in EXC+ condition throughout. The total length is 48.0 cm. The Cutlass has the maker mark on the blade: Carl Eickhorn Solingen, along the spine of the blade is the distributors mark W.MICHOVIUS COTTBUS. Grip: The hilt is an aluminum base which is lavishly covered nicely with gold gilt. The gilt remains at 99% throughout. The hilt features a “D” guard ending in the shape of a deer’s hoof. The “D” guard is elaborately engraved in a scroll and oakleaf motif. The clamshell cross-guard is adorned with a grazing deer and the grip base cap has the Eickhorn trademark embedded in it. The grip plates are simply fantastic. They have outstanding grains in both sides and have turned a fine ivory color. These grip plates are perfect throughout. They are decorated with acorns having nicely beaded caps. Blade: The slab sided blade of this cutlass is 33.0 cm in length. This blade is a beauty and having triple etching, un-sharpened, un-tipped and void any nicks or dings the blade is in very desirable condition without all the extras. Refer to the attached photos for details of the etchings. The detail in the etchings is just amazing and the darkness in this one is very desirable. Eickhorn forestry pieces are known for there dark etches and it is only when they have been cleaned that you lose the background greying behind the etch. This one is in totally uncleaned condition and almost mint condition. If that is not enough this is not only a double etch but a triple etch, along the spine of the blade is the distributors mark W.MICHOVIUS COTTBUS, Cottbus being the only known distributor of Eickhorn Forestry daggers. Their makers mark can be seen on the reverse of the blade on the ricasso where a stamped squirrel holding a sword can be seen. Scabbard: The scabbard shell is black leather. It shows some age and usage signs but is still in excellent condition. This leather features the twin decorative lines which run the length of the edges on both sides. The mounts are a brass variety. The upper mount features a fine acorn with checkered cap. The edge is scalloped where it meets the scabbard shell. The same is true of the lower mount and it has two sets of twin decorative lines that tend to tie in with the motif of the ferrule. The gilding throughout these brass mounts is still all there. The scabbard mounts are retained by staples in the usual manner. For payment I will accept personal checks, money orders, certified check or cashiers’ check, all major credit cards.
