SCARCE US Model 1906 LIGHT CAVALRY Saber by AMES
Last Issued Light Cavalry Blade Issued to US Cavalry
Here we present a scarce Ames U.S. Model 1906 Light Cavalry Saber, made in 1906 by Ames Sword Company in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Fewer than 20,000 of these blades were made. This model is significant to the collector in that it was the last light cavalry saber issued to U.S. cavalry troops and the second to last cavalry sword issued at all to U.S. cavalry (replaced soon after by young George Patton’s straight bladed sword). It was during this period when traditional cavalry use and blade use was drawing its last breaths. This saber would have been used in conflicts such as the Moro Rebellion in the Philippines. The design was a fairly old one, not changing much from the original Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber from the American Civil War. The brass guard was replaced with an iron one, and the rings on the scabbard moved closer together for ease of carry.
This specimen is marked “A.S.Co.” with a U.S. Ordnance Dept. flaming bomb proof mark and the date “1906”. The other side of the ricasso is marked “US” and “J.H.C.”, which are the government inspector’s initials. The scabbard is marked with the inspector’s initials “G.E.W.” for G.E. Worgen, and “A20”, which may be a unit rack number.
The overall condition is very good. The iron hardware and scabbard are dark with age. The markings are clear. The original leather wrap is thinning, but 90% there, with original wire wrap still tight. The original leather washer remains. The blade is bright, having been protected by the scabbard. Here is a scarce example of a U.S. Cavalry blade.
