"US Model 1840 South Carolina Palmetto Armory (SW1368)
Description: "Very nice 1840 cavalry saber with scabbard that appears to have “Columbia S.C." stamped on the ricasso. There are three small marks that interfere with the marking, so it is not possible to read the entire stamping clearly, but the “S.C." is quite clear, as are most of the other letters. The marks do appear to be correct, and are both upper and lower case letters as can be seen on all originals. The saber is a fine example of the 1840 type. It is entirely comparable to an Ames 1840 in most particulars. The front of the guard is a little bit thinner than the rest of the guard. There appears to be a Roman numeral “I" struck on the pommel. The grip retains all of its leather and wire. The blade is well made and balanced, and period sharpened, retaining an exceptionally sharp blade. There is a double “V" scratched into the blade that I suspect was corporal’s chevrons. They are deep and obviously done some time ago. The scabbard has been painted black, and is in very good condition, with a few minor dents. Dimensions: The blade is 36 inches long. The sword overall out of its scabbard is 42 inches long. The sword overall in its scabbard is 43.25 inches long. The sword is in very good condition overall. The front of the guard is very slightly bent. There are three small strikes into the ricasso that obscure one or two of the letters in the marks. The blade has a double “V" scratched into it. There is a tiny patch of pitting right at the point. There are two dents in the scabbard. SOLD |
