18th Century Swiss Grenadier Hanger by Rodolphe Kirschbaum of Solingen
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 30 1/2" overall, with a 25 1/2" curved, single-edged blade having wide single fullers. The steel has been cleaned to bright, but has begun to reacquire a dull gray patina, and has old sharpening marks along the edge. A large bear, heraldic emblem of the Swiss canton of Bern, is present on either side of the forte, and the back edge is engraved with the maker’s name: "Rodolphe Daniel Kirschbaum Fabricant a Solingen." The fairly bright brass hilt has a complicated guard with single forward-swept quillon, thumb loop, heart-shaped counterguard, and double-branched knucklebow. The grip has tightly wound, braided wire, and terminates in a vaguely bear’s head-shaped pommel with exposed capstan rivet. The brown leather scabbard has several creases along its length, with heavy flaking and some breaks in the leather just above the brass chape. The throat has a heart-shaped frog stud, and the brass has been cleaned at some point. The blunt-tipped chape has an identical patina, with numerous small peen marks at the tip. This is a wonderful 18th century military sword, seldom-seen in the US, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: Kirschbaum Model: Sword |
