CIVIL WAR Antique FOOT OFFICER’S Saber

With Beautifully Etched Blade

Here we present an antique Foot Officer’s Saber, manufactured circa 1860. This saber would have been privately purchased by many officers leaving for the battlefield. This is a particularly handsome sword with a straightforward patriotic motif on the guard of a federal eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in a banner above. The guard would have provided good protection to the hand and was a thrust and cut weapon. The blade is very finely etched with voluptuous scrolls with “US” in the middle on one side and an eagle with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the other.

The ricasso is marked with a stick arrow maker’s mark on one side, and a circular “PROVED” mark on the other. The spine of the blade is marked “IRON PROOF”.  

This sword is in near fine condition. The iron hilt and scabbard bear a dark, even patina. The blade is bright as it has been protected by the scabbard. The markings and etchings are clear. The rayskin and wire wrapped grip is in great shape. A very handsome blade from the Civil War!
