This knife spent the last several years in thepersonal collection of Lewis Leigh of Virginia. His collection matched many ofthe finest museums in the country. This one is a Southern made Bowie knife thatis known to collectors as the Pistol Grip. It is because of the shape of thehandle is distinctive from the other knives of the day. This one is verysimilar to the one illustrated in the Bowie knife armed soldier photographsection of the Confederate Bowie Knife book by Sexton, Melton and Phillips. Onpage 265 it shows the young Rebel with his knife on his side. This massiveknife measures 19-1/2 inches in overall size with the blade making up 14-1/2inches.
