Indian Wars Era U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Sword by Springfield Arm
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 37 5/16” overall, and has a 31” straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in excellent condition having nearly all of the original factory polish remaining and lovely etched panels with foliate scrollwork, “U.S.”, American eagle, and martial panoply. There are few, barely detectable specks of mild freckling along its length. The forte reverse is also armory marked above the long ricasso: “U.S./Armory/Springfield/Mass.” A small inspector stamp is present on the ricasso: “G.G.S.” (Geo. G. Saunders, Inspector ca. 1873). The hilt is also in excellent condition with 98-99% of the original gilt finish remaining and an intact black shagreen grip with braided wire wrap. The counterguard is of the folding type and the metal scabbard has traces of the nickel plate finish remaining. This is a handsome, armory-made sword and is in fine-excellent overall condition.
