PRE FRENCH INDIAN WAR REVOLUTIONARY WAR DOG HEAD SILVER HILT SWORD CA 1670
Description: PRESERVING HISTORY, PRE FRENCH-INDIAN WAR REVOLUTIONARY WAR DOG HEAD SILVER HILT SWORD CA 1670. THIS IS ONE OF A KIND PIECES OF ART, MOST LIKELY MADE FOR KING CHARLES II OR SOMEONE VERY INFLUENTIAL IN HIS COURT. THIS IS A SMALL SWORD MEASURING 23 1/2 INCHES OVERALL WITH A 18 INCH BLADE. WHEN YOU BUY THE BEST YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO MAKE EXCUSES LATER. The design of the hilt seems is unique to this piece. It has a solid silver pommel in the form of a dog's head and solid counter-curved scaled quillons terminating in pairs of contra-facing dogs’ heads. The dogs’ heads look like those of spaniels which were popular amongst English high society, and of which King Charles II was especially fond, causing the breed to carry his name. This sword was most likely a royal commission for king Charles or someone very influential in his Court. The grip is of stag antler with a silver basal ferrule punched and chased with foliage. All the silver parts, pommel, cross guard and ferrule are clearly stamped with the pre-Britannia Silver Standard mark “WB” conjoined in raised relief inside a depressed heraldic shield. The slightly curved single-edged blade is double edged towards the point and has an armourer’s mark of a bust of a man wearing a hat facing to the right in raised relief inside an oval depression on both sides. The blade length is 18 inches , overall 23 1/2 inches long SOLD |
