Presentation Sword Cane to U.S. Consul to Montevideo E. Jacobs Circa 1878
Description: This is a fine and historic Presentation Sword Cane that has a U.S. Civil War connection and a historic U.S. Embassy Montevideo significance. Also it was presented to E. Jacobs from Captain Sedgley of the British Bark "Cathedral". The horn handle is engraved with this provenance and is clearly legible. The sword blade is in excellent condition with original nitre blueing and gilt remaining. The blade is diamond shaped as the early British daggers and swords. The shaft is English briar wood and there is a push button latch release on the gilded and engraved mounts. The sword blade measures 27 inches and including the handle it measures 32 1/4 inches. Overall with the sword in the cane shaft it measures 34 1/4 inches. The bottom of the shaft is missing its original ferrule and their are some stable cracks that extend up the shaft 6 to 7 inches.
