U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Sword by Springfield Armory
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 37 1/2” overall, and has a 31 1/4” straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in superb condition having virtually all of the original factory polish remaining and lovely etched panels with foliate scrollwork, “U.S.”, American eagle, and martial panoply. The forte reverse is also armory marked above the long ricasso: “U.S./Armory/Springfield/Mass.” The hilt is also in excellent condition with 99% plus of the original gilt finish remaining and an intact shagreen grip with braided wire wrap. The counterguard is of the non-folding type and a small U.S. general service eagle button is tied to the knucklebow branch with old twine. The nickel scabbard has 90% of the original bright metal remaining, although there are two spots of dark freckling, one below each of the hanger bands, where some localized rust was cleaned long ago. The gilt drag is inspector marked, “S.W.P.”, and dates the sword to the 1880s – 1890s. This is a handsome, armory-made sword and is in excellent overall condition.
