Griffin & Howe Butt Plate from the 1920's to the Mid 1930's
Description: UPDATE: 7/08/23. I have a link to G&H # 921 in 7 m/m which had this same style plate. If you want t see it, just email me and I will send it to you . . . . A note on these Germany-made butt plates and their engraving. Rudolph Kornbrath engraved many of these butt plates for Griffin & Howe, Sedgely, Hoffman Arms, Etc. What was really interesting was that seemed to have "Patterns" that he used that were different for each gunmaker. I have had Sedgley and Hoffmans, and the style of engraving on their metal butt plates was unique, unlike the engraving used on G&H guns. It seemed as though each separate gunmaker had their own separate style. And, as added "Provenance," this butt came from a retired G&H Shop Foreman, which I have noted below. If you want a picture of a Model 54 with this similar style butt plate, email me and I will send it to you . . . . For sale is an Original Griffin and Howe Butt Plate that would have been used on their custom built rifles from the 1920's to the mid to late 1930's. Griffin & Howe imported these from Germany (this is stamped on the back side and pictured). It is lightly engraved. It is the non-trap variety. Griffin and Howe used this particular butt plate on their single shot rifles, and I have seen 3 on those particular rifles. I have also seen 3 of these used on the Griffin & Howe Custom Made Winchester Model 54 Winchesters ("Depression Era Sporters") when they put new stocks on those guns. This was origianlly part of the collection of a retired Griffin & Howe shop foreman. The listing is for the butt plate only. I have no screws for this butt plate. Dimensions are 5 and 5/16" (Length) by 1 5/8" (Width at the widest point--near the top). It is just a tad bit bigger than a Standard Model 70 Style Buttplate. The top spur looks as though it may have been bent up slightly. You can see this in Pictures # 4 and # 6. I'm sure that it could be heated and bent down slightly if need be. These are simply impossible to find anymore. I'll ship this free to the lower 48 states only. Price is $487.00. Call or email me if you have any questons Price: $469.99 Contact Seller |
