Silver Portuguese Cigarette Case by Topazio

Description:
This is an exquisitely wrought hinged case that does not have a solid surface; instead the walls are artfully composed entirely of intricately coiled silver wire filigree with a cloisonn' badge on the cover depicting a stylized Portuguese crest. The silver wire retains some of the original gilt finish with the balance tarnished to a mottled gray/black patina, especially around the edges. The interior of the case retains its bright gilt finish with intact elastic cigarette retainers and a "TOPAZIO" marked clasp button. The enamel on the crest id in very good condition but there is a small chip at the top right of the shield and a little missing just below.. Topazio is a well-known Porto-based silversmith and could well be considered the Tiffany & Co. of Portugal. This example of their work is in fine condition and would make a lovely addition to a collection.
