Pair of European Bone-Handled Dirks
Description: The first is an attractive little knife that measures 8 1/2" overall with a 4 1/2" straight, double-edged blade with high central ridges and full-length etched panels. The etched panels have about 90% of the original gold wash remaining with different fouled anchor motifs on either side of the blade, and lyres on both sides of the ricasso. The simple crossguard has short, straight quillons with dark brown freckling that carries over onto the ball-shaped quillons, and the tapered bone grip is intact, with a somewhat crudely carved scallop motif at butt. The leather scabbard has a flaked exterior with some wear at the open tip, and the German silver throat is present, but loose. This is an attractive and well made little dagger, probably French in origin. The second is of similar design, and measures 8 1/2" overall with a 4 5/8" straight, double-edged blade with high central ridges and full-length etched panels. The etched panels have about 90-92% of the original gold wash remaining with floral scrollwork motifs on either side of the blade, and a lyre on one side of the ricasso, a bunch of flowers on the other. The simple crossguard has short, straight quillons with dark brown freckling that carries over onto the ball-shaped quillons, and the tapered bone grip is intact, with a carved scallop motif at butt. There is a stable, irregular crack running down from the grip ferrule, and a spot of ink or some other dark liquid that has darkened a spot near the carving. The leather scabbard has a heavily flaked exterior with some wear at the open tip, and the German silver throat is present, but loose. This is an attractive and well made little dagger, also probably French in origin, and they would make a great addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: French Model: Dirk |
