CIVIL WAR 1858 ENLISTED INFANTRYMAN'S "HARDEE HAT" BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE
Description: BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL EXAMPLE OF AN 1858 FEDERAL ENLISTED INFANTRYMAN'S "HARDEE HAT" Super nice, original example of a P1858 Federal enlisted infantryman’s hat, commonly known as a “Hardee Hat”. Hat retains original blue worsted wool hat cord, black ostrich plume, and die struck brass insignia. Hat is constructed of black pressed wool. Plume, cords, and tassels are both in excellent condition. Brim is regulation correct for enlisted men with 2 rows of fine black stitching along the 3" brim. Top of crown shows a 3 - 1/2" slightly lighter line that may be an older conservation to stabilize a soft spot, otherwise, the black felt is in very good condition with a nice shape. Brim is pinned up on the hat’s left side with a die struck brass, spread-winged eagle device "Jeff Davis" hat pin. Face of crown has the brass infantry “hunting horn” insignia with a 3/4” high brass number “13” above the horn. Above that is the company brass "C" designator. Brass insignia are pressed through the felt and are held in place by period correct small leather thongs. Interior is unlined and retains the original 3” high, thin Moroccan leather sweatband, still supple and attached. Interior top of the crown is thin, black oilcloth decorated with a gold-stamped maker’s mark of an eagle over a stand of arms and “U.S. ARMY HAT / EXTRA/ MANUFACTURE". CONDITION: Overall, a very strong example of this style hat with age commensurate wear that adds just enough patina to give it a great look. A TRUE LEGACY ITEM, YOU HEIRS WILL THANK YOU.
