Original Civil War US Model 1858 Gratz Canteen
Description: This Philadelphia 5 ring canteen is strongly stamped on the puter neck "R.H. GRATZ & Co. PHILADA" on the spout and retains its original, what appeasers the heavy twill cover with a beautiful patina. Seams are hand stitched and very tight. Light surface oxidation is visible on the 5/8" strap loops while the covered body of the canteen appears dent free and in very good condition. Stopper, chain, and strap are missing, which is common among these pieces. Typical of the Philadelphia style, this canteen has 5 concentric rings on either side of the body meant to bolster its rigidity and strength during field use. The neck of the canteen is pushed in on one side as you can see in the photo's. By the makers mark, dating of this canteen is late 1863 contract, according to Mike O'Donnell "U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775 - 1910" Pg 123.; Price: $199.00 Contact Seller |
