Rare Pre-Civil War Shako of the 7th Regiment New York State Militia, ID to Owner 1858
Description: Nice looking pre-Civil War era dress shako of the famous New York 7th Regiment State Militia. Shako retains all leather straps, sweatband and insignia. It was missing its white pompom when I purchased it, but I since found a vintage white plume of slightly later vintage. The plume and holder are slightly shorter than the pre-war version would have been, but do add a great look to the display. Per the regimental history, this style hat was worn from May 1853 until 1861. This one can be dated by the maker label of John A Baker that is inside, as the listed address of 162 Fulton Street, New York, was used by Baker from 1853 to 1858. At the beginning of the Civil War, in answer to President Lincoln’s call for troops, the New York 7th Regiment was the first to arrive to aid in the defense of Washington D.C. Many members of the pre- War 7th Regiment went on to become officers of other regiments during the Civil War. This shako has the owner’s name of J. H. Falconer written on the label inside. He is listed on the Roll of the 7th Regiment for the year 1858. This is a museum grade piece with the great history of belonging to a member of one of the premier militia units of the 19th century. I have never seen another one of these for sale. Final photo shows the shako displayed with a pre-Civil War New York 7th Regiment jacket I will also be putting up for sale. Don’t confuse this authentic pre-War shako with the many postwar 7th Regiment Shakos you see advertised for sale. Those later shakos first came out in 1867 and are shorter in height, having only one gold insignia on the front. If you want to compare this shako to another great pre-Civil War example, it is identical to the one owned by 7th NYSM member Lewis C. Parmalee and shown in various image banks and artist Don Troiani’s Facebook page, if you search for Parmalee on the web. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Shipping charge $35 towards cost of Priority Mail and full insurance. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. Price: $1,550.00 Contact Seller |
