HIGHLY ORNATE MASONIC FRATERNAL SWORD BY "THE M.C. LILLEY & CO." COMPLETE GOLD WASH WITH BELT, BUCKLE, HANGER CHAINS & CASE, CIRCA 1923-25.
Description: HIGHLY ORNATE MASONIC FRATERNAL SWORD BY "THE M.C. LILLEY & CO." COMPLETE GOLD WASH WITH BELT, BUCKLE, HANGER CHAINS & CASE, CIRCA 1923-25. The sword is 37" overall(out of scabbard) with 30" with acid etched Knights themed exploits on both sides having "G.W. Banks" in banner of same. Ricasso etched "The M.C. Lilley & Co. , Columbus, Ohio" with "Germany" stamped under that at leather washer. Hilt along with Knights Helmet completely gold washed with no losses. Original ivory grip with scrimshawed "G.B" (owner) and Cross and triangle opposite. Excellent condition false edge. Gold wash scabbard 31 3/4" overall with high relief Templar symbols and Cross with ruby red glass inlay and all three rings for hangers. Excellent condition leather backed cloth and gold washed copper bullion with gold wash buckle with ruby red glass cross on front and :In Hoc Signo Vinces" in relief around that. All gold wash remaining. Even the hangers and clips are gold washed. Leather scabbard with owners name embossed in ink on flap(some stitching issues typical but repairable). Dr. George Washington Banks was born in 1855 and died in 1935(must have received this about ten years prior as Lilley was known in this capacity (see address) from only 1923-25. He was a member of Mt. Nebo Lodge No.91 and there is much more to be found about him online. It’s interesting to note that Founding father George Washington's own masonic apron was housed here until 2009 when it was given/lent to Mt. Vernon. Very ornate complete group with more history to be uncovered. Too bad gold washed groups such as this bring so little these days. Try getting it made today. M.C. Lilley took over the famous Ames Co. works not too much before this was made. SOLD |
