1917 Vintage Smith & Wesson Model 1913 Automatic in .35 S&W Auto Caliber
** Nice All-Original 2nd Variation Pistol! **
Description: Joe Wesson of Smith & Wesson designed this unique self-loading pistol (called today the Model 1913) in 1912, with the S&W firm actually beginning production in 1913. At the time it was simply called the ".35 Automatic Pistol" by Smith & Wesson. It was chambered in the proprietary .35 S&W Auto cartridge and was available in both blue and nickel finishes for the sum of $16.50. At it's introduction it was advertised as "the safest and most dependable handgun in the world". The pistol features a 3.5" inch barrel, smooth Walnut grips with S&W medallions, a 7-shot detachable box magazine, and a unique hinged action that pivots open from the rear for access to the bolt and breech/bore. The pistol has two safety mechanisms, a front-strap mounted grip safety and a roller safety switch mounted on the rear. Due to the stout recoil spring needed to tame the .35 S&W Auto cartridge, the Model 1913 features a tab/button on the slide that when depressed disconnects the recoil spring from the slide, allowing easy racking of the slide. This particular pistol is serial number 3987, making it's date of manufacture 1917. It is a second variation model which incorporated a new magazine release that moves to the rear to release the magazine, rather than to the side like the 1st variation guns. It is an all-original pistol with lots of original factory gloss blue finish remaining. As you can see from the pictures, the gun shows some light wear and patina in places but nothing that detracts too much from the attractive look of this Smith & Wesson. The bore in this Model 1913 is excellent, mirror-bright and free from any pitting, erosion, or imperfections. The rifling in this pistol still looks like-new with sharp lands and grooves. The original Walnut grips on this Smith are in excellent shape overall. Both sides are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. Both sides have fully intact rivets attaching the metal backing plates, and both sides are serial numbered to this gun. All of the controls on this Model 1913 are in perfect working order and the action is smooth and tight. We have no doubt this this S&W will shoot just as well today as the day it left the factory 102 years ago! If you have been looking for one of these scarce and unique automatics from Smith & Wesson, here is your chance to get a very nice original example that has not been messed with.
