AJ Ordnance Thomas .45
Description: AJ ORDNANCE THOMAS 45 Developed by Frank S. Thomas in the early 1970s, Alexander James Ordnance produced the Thomas 45 for just a year, between 1977 and 1978. Designed as a small, large calibre pistol the Thomas used a delayed blowback action to slow the recoil of the slide. Thomas used a pair of slide-locking levers that were engaged by a paddle in the grip, which appears to be, but isn’t, a grip safety. Thomas’ patent explains the system: “A lever pivotably mounted at the rear of the hand grip is engaged by the user’s hand and restrains the rearward motion of the slide member on the frame against the pull of the trigger.” The delaying levers act on a cut in the slide, seen just above the grip. As a result racking the slide with a firm grip on the pistol is difficult as it engages the levers. Externally the pistol’s profile looks a little like the Sauer 38H or Walther PPK. Thomas’ pistol used a double action only trigger and was striker fired. It fed from a 5-round magazine. Once fired the slide recoiled, pushing the levers backwards, in the time this took the chamber pressure would drop and the action could open safely. Unlike other delayed blowback actions like the Heckler & Koch P7 there is no gas delay mechanism. The pistol may be compact it is not light, weighing 32oz (0.9kg). While its relatively small size for a .45 ACP was attractive, the pistol was snappy due to its chambering . This gun appears to be unfired since factory in original box with owners manual and papers. 99% condition. Only 600 of these gun were ever produced.
