Heckler & Koch Mark 23 81000361 12+1 Suppressor Ready New in Box
Description: The Mark 23 is one of H&K’s most famous pistols. Originally designed for a USSOCOM competition known as the Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OHWS). The purpose of the competition was to find a replacement for the Beretta M9 pistols used by SOCOM units at the time. SOCOM’s use of small units that operate in close means that, inevitably, pistols are more likely to be used as a primary weapon than as a sidearm. It was quickly decided not to use the standard NATO 124gr 9mm round due to its lack of stopping power. Instead, the classic and proven .45 ACP round was chosen for its stopping power, as well as its known ability to work with suppressors better than the 9mm round. One of the reasons the Mark 23 is so famous is the extreme nature of the tests the pistol had to pass before being chosen by SO The tests subjected the submitted pistols to the strictest reliability testing any pistol has ever gone through. The requirement was for nothing short of 2,000 MRBF (mean rounds between failure) with both M1911 ball and +P ammunition. The H&K OHWS averaged 6,027 MRBF and could reach as high as 15,122 MRBF. Three examples of the H&K pistol were put through a 30,000 round endurance test (with +P ammo) while maintaining an accuracy of 2.5 inches at 25 meters; only the pistol’s O-ring needed replacement after 20,000 rounds. Another test involved firing the pistol from a precision firing fixture (to test the pistol’s inherent accuracy). In more than 450 accuracy test firings from the fixture at 25 meters (27.34 yards), the OHWS pistols far exceeded the government requirement, averaging 1.44 inches, with 65 groups of less than 1 inch. There were four groups of 0.5 inches, with 5 rounds passing through the same hole. The submitted pistols were also put through tests involving temperatures from between -25 degrees F up to 140 degrees F while being exposed to mud, ice, and sand. When the tests were complete, H&K was awarded a production contract in June 1995. The pistol was type classified as the Mark 23 Mod 0 and 1,950 systems (pistol + laser + suppressor) were ordered. It has been in use with SOCOM since 1996. Despite all of the Mark 23’s admirable qualities, its size and weight led to the development of a smaller pistol, which eventually led to the USP Tactical. Still, the fact that the Mark 23 remains in use with SOCOM despite newer pistols such as the Mark 24 being adopted, speaks for the 23’s effectiveness. It has been used worldwide by SOCOM forces. In the civilian world, the Mark 23 is famous for being used by Solid Snake in the original Metal Gear Solid. It is also the pistol of choice for Christian Bale in Terminator: Salvation. Another interesting fact about the Mark 23 is that while it is marked as being chambered for the .45 ACP, it is rated for and can safely fire the .45 Super cartridge (a very souped up .45 ACP) without any changes to the pistol being required. This new in box pistol comes with two 12-round magazines, a set of spare O-rings for the barrel, tools, and a manual. Please note that the threaded barrel uses a 16x1 Right-Hand twist. The Mark 23 is the ONLY H&K pistol that uses this thread twist; all other H&K pistols chambered for the .45 ACP use a 16x1 Left-Hand twist. If purchasing a suppressor and the associated piston, be careful to make sure the piston uses the correct twist.
