The Rock Island Armory (RIA) 1911A1-FS is a modern production pistol that pays homage to the classic U.S. Military M1911A1 service pistol. To understand its history, we need to look at both the history of the M1911A1 design and the history of Rock Island Armory.  

History of the M1911A1:

The original M1911 was designed by John Browning and adopted by the U.S. Army on March 29, 1911. It was a single-action, recoil-operated, magazine-fed semi-automatic pistol chambered in the powerful .45 ACP cartridge.  
Experience in World War I led to some minor modifications aimed at improving shootability. These changes, standardized in 1924, resulted in the M1911A1 designation. Key differences included a shorter trigger, an arched mainspring housing, a longer grip safety spur (beavertail), and finger clearance cuts in the frame behind the trigger.  
The M1911 and its A1 variant served as the standard sidearm for the U.S. military through numerous conflicts, including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, earning a legendary reputation for reliability and stopping power.
