Erfurt P.08 RIG, 1914 LUGER, MATCHING NUMBERS, 1914 HOLSTER, Vintage Firearms Inc
Description: General Specs: Erfurt Luger, 1914, 9mm, 30oz, 4" Serial Number: 5996 Description: Between 1910 and 1918, the Model 1908 or P.08 Luger was manufactured at the Imperial Arsenal in Erfurt, Saxony. Of the approximately 453,000 produced between 1914 and 1918 only 7000 were made in 1914, the lowest known number for any of the war years. This firearm was the main sidearm for the Imperial German army throughout the First World War and continued its service into the Second World War until superseded by the Walther P38. This is an excellent example of a 1914 dated Erfurt Luger. It is complete with two magazines and a leather holster. This Erfurt P.08 is serial numbered 5996 and is dated 1914 on its chamber. The toggle is marked with the distinctive Crown over ERFURT. Typical of all Erfurt made pistols there is a profusion of stamps and inspection proofs. The partial serial number-96 is stamped on most of the small components including the inside of the grips, the serial numbers throughout the frame, slide and small parts, all are matching. Of note the proof marks on the right side of the slide are most often seen washed out but on this pistol they are sharp and defined. This pistol retains most of its original factory finish showing holster wear on the high points and some edge wear. The metal exhibits moderate freckling in areas. The trigger, thumb safety, take down lever, magazine release and ejector are straw colored. The extractor bears the legend GELADEN (loaded), visible only when a round is chambered. The walnut grips are original (serial numbered to the gun) are in very good condition, there is some handling wear and a few damaged diamonds, there are no cracks or chips. The pistol has two magazines, firstly, a tin-plated magazine with serial number 6716 and two Erfurt proof marks on its wood base- it is not uncommon for Erfurt pistols to have mismatched magazines. The second magazine is a 1937 Haenel- Schmeisser blued magazine with 122 over the Waffenamt and date 37. The base is aluminum with the serial number 8363. The Rig is complete with an original holster dated 1914 and retains its takedown/ loading tool. The holster is a pleasing chestnut brown leather with normal wear and scuffing, its stitching is tight and is in excellent condition for leather that is 108 years old! This gun is in remarkable shape for a firearm used in two major conflicts, there is no play in the action and its tolerances are still tight, and the bore is bright with strong rifling, overall, the gun feels solid and precise; a true testament to the skill of the craftsmen who built this gun.
