MAUSER P38 “F” POLICE CODE EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL FINISH 99+ CONDITION
Description: For three principle reasons this is an extremely rare Walther. First, the AC is stacked over 44 after the P38. I have run across only one other example of a 44 stacked date due to the fact that in late 43 Walther changed the configuration to a straight line. [See, Gangarosa “P38" pg.85]. Second, even though the "AC" Walther marking, this pistol was manufactured by Mauser factory [see Mauser proofs below] for Nazi police in the Bavarian Police District of Furstenfeldbruck- not Frankfurt. Third, the pistol shows little wear with a finish that appears original 99+ condition. Self appointed experts contend that the WWII Nazi P38 pistols that are police marked number between 450 to 800- a small number but those numbers do not specify which police district. Each district has a separate code identification. The “F”[with no period] designation indicates the Bavarian Police District of Furstenfeldbruck. A code "F." [with a period] is Frankfurt. [See, T. Lapin, “Mauser Military Rifle Markings”, p.158, “German Police District Codes”] The WWII population of the Furstenfeldbruck district was less than 20,000 persons. Very small police dept. suggesting a very hard police code to find. The condition of this pistol is excellent plus. The finish appears original with 99% plus of the original wartime blued/phosphate finish remaining. Two stampings on the slide suggest original finish- the left side serial number and the right side police stamp. Each show bright metal indicating stamped after finish. The grip strap shows no indication of lesser finish or presence of patina indicating hand use. The upper edge of the rear and front site show minor holster wear. I see no edge or high spot wear. The markings are clear and sharp. The barrel is bright with strong lands. The grips are in excellent condition with a nice matching color overall with only minor handling marks. The paint under the safety switch (D & F) appear to be the sloppy original paint colors. The red and white colors were there when I acquired the pistol in the 90s. P38 police pistols did not follow the military number system- no suffix; 4346-5501 number range. The extremely rare Nazi [swastika] eagle over “F” police mark [Furstenfeldbruck] is on the right side slide with the Mauser Eagle/WaA135, Waffenamt proof. The left side of the slide is also marked with the Eagle/N commercial proof with the serial number (5291) stamped on the rear of the slide in front of the safety lever. All numbers of this pistol match the Walther slide serial number. The mix of Waffenamt and commercial/police proofs is due to the fact that Waffenamt inspected components were made available to police inspectors based on requirements at the time. All parts began as military components. The left side of the barrel lug and frame both have a single Eagle Mauser WaA135 Waffenamt proof. Left side of barrel also has the Eagle/N proof. The front of the barrel is numbered "5291". The locking block is also stamped with last three numbers (291) on the underside of the breech block. The proper grips have P/1528 and 1529/2 [in lower circle] and proper Hersteller-Zeichen symbol in upper circle. The mag is proper subcontractor Bruno Czech “jvd” Eagle/WaA706 proof on spline and “P38" lower left. The holster is vintage police style. My feeling won't get hurt if anyone has research source material contradicting any I have put forth. I'm only trying to be specific and accurate.
