Allen & Thurber Tube Hammer single-shot "Pocket Rifle
Description: The Tube Hammer double-action single-shot pistol was the second model produced at Grafton. Allen's new double-action design combined with the fledgling percussion firing system created a marvel of its day, and paved the way for the development of the pepperbox. All Tube Hammers were made at Grafton, but their limited production was soon superseded by the long-running bar-hammer single-shot. This example was among the "first issue" production run exhibiting the earliest parts, configuration, and assembly, including early trigger cam and original mainspring screw attachment to the frame. Half-round/half-octagon barrel with seven flats stamped "Allen & Thurber" "Grafton, Mass" "Allen's Patent" "Cast Steel Warranted" "P.M. EA 1837" " 14 " and the less common "Pocket Rifle". Barrel shows minor clamp marks and some losses in the stampings. The trigger, latch, frame and sideplate are well-marked "14". The original grips are inexplicably as new, un-flawed with full varnish. Wood fits well, with spangles and grip-pins intact. Overall condition is good to very good without finish. Standard Grafton hand-engraving showing wear on sideplate and wide gripstrap. Barrel is mostly smooth with scattered pitting on frame. Hammer and right frame have been cleaned with no visable engraving. Action is very good. This is a respectable example of a very rare model, and except for a replaced nipple, is complete and original. + Shipping SOLD Antique: Yes |
