Allen & Wheelock Large-Frame Barhammer Percussion Revolver - First Issue
Description: **NEW PRICE** This model, also known as the "Transitional Pepperbox Revolver", was exactly that. To create his first revolver, Allen simply modified his proven pepperbox design by shortening the barrel cluster into a loading cylinder, then adding a solid frame with a single barrel. The hammer, trigger, and cylinder action, as well as the grip design and mainspring are identical to the pepperbox. Early issues had a curious design feature that required the barrel's removal to access a threaded cylinder pin. Only "a few" were produced before this design was replaced by the more conventional and convenient push-in cylinder pin under the barrel. This example, #"79", is a first-issue with the screw-off 3 1/2" barrel, long-cylinder (1 5/8" ) and threaded cylinder pin behind the barrel. Barrel and hammer show standard address "ALLEN & WHEELOCK / PATENTED APRIL 16, 1845". Frame, barrel, cylinder, sideplate, trigger, internal parts, mainspring and grips are marked "79". Standard cylinder engraving is complete and sharp, and nipples are undamaged. Condition is very good, without finish. Metal is mostly smooth and unpitted with scattered discoloration blemishes. Grips and varnish are very good, solid and well-fitting with pronounced grain relief and only a couple of small marks. Mechanically fine. This is a rare, seldom seen model that is complete and original in every detail. + Shipping SOLD Antique: Yes |
