Allen & Wheelock Sidehammer Lipfire Pocket Revolver
Description: **NEW PRICE** The late 1850's was a dynamic time for gunmakers as they ramped up production in pursuit of Civil War contracts. Allen demonstrated his penchant for innovation by embracing the future of cartridge ammunition, then manufacturing his proprietary lipfire cartridges and firearms. Lipfire was similar to rimfire ammunition except that the expensive primer was isolated in a small protrusion of the rim and could only be loaded such that it aligned with the hammer. Allen risked infringement of the Rollin White patent protecting bored-through cylinders, but ultimately could not prevail. Thus, total production of all lipfire models was less than 1250 combined, making them one of Allen's rarest series. This 6-shot, .32 caliber model utilizes a rack & pinion mounted extractor with a top ratchet bar unique to this model. The ratchet operates the extractor rod and also serves to lock the loading gate in place. At safety-cock, the cylinder spins freely allowing easy allignment for extraction of spent casings. This example, #2, is early production with the distinctive beveled corner on the plate covering the rack & pinion. Flayderman's Guide makes the distinction that this model was serial-numbered versus the batch numbering on the Army and Navy lipfires, and this was a known transition period to consistent serial-numbering. The significance of # "2" is debatable, but includes the possibility that this was the second gun produced. Nonetheless, the frame, barrel, cylinder, sideplate, internal parts, grips and even the cylinder pin, are clearly stamped # "2". The 6" barrel is marked, "ALLEN & WHEELOCK WORCESTER MS. U.S." with patent dates and some losses in the stampings. Condition is very good with ratchet bar showing mostly original blue and cylinder showing 90% finish with drag marks. Overall metal is smooth and un-pitted with traces of finish, sharp edges, and scattered blemishes. Grips are very good with minor wear and scars. Mechanically fine. + Shipping SOLD Antique: Yes |
