Antique Ornate OTTOMAN EMPIRE Spanish Caucasian MIQUELET .62 Pistol Militia Late 18th to Early 19th Century Miquelet Pistol
Description: Antique Ornate OTTOMAN EMPIRE Spanish Caucasian MIQUELET .62 Pistol Militia Late 18th to Early 19th Century Miquelet Pistol Here we present an antique Ornate Antique Spanish Caucasian Miquelet Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s. The Miquelet is an early, robust type of flintlock firearm that remained popular across the Ottoman Empire from the 17th century into the early 20th century. Numerous intricately decorated guns resembling this example are still preserved in Istanbul, likely manufactured for the Ottoman Imperial Guard. The term “Miquelet” refers to a specific type of flintlock developed in Spain. Collectors and curators today use “Miquelet lock” to describe this particular firing mechanism found in muskets and pistols. It represents a distinctive form of snaplock, originally employing flint against steel for ignition. This mechanism was widespread in the Spanish, Portuguese, Ottoman, Italian, North African, and Balkan regions from the late 16th to the mid-19th centuries. The label “Miquelet lock” was not documented until the 19th century, long after the mechanism first appeared in the 16th century, and its origins remain uncertain. A common theory suggests the term was coined by British troops during the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) units assigned to the Duke of Wellington’s army. In most of Spain, it was traditionally called “llave de rastrillo” or “rake lock,” while in Catalonia and Valencia, it was known as “pany de pedrenyal,” meaning “flint lock” or simply "pedrenyal." The overall condition is good. Strong action. The lock is not seated flushly against the stock. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid forend and grip with an expected amount of handling and storage wear. Distinct niello designs. Absent pommel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 13-3/8 inches. Caliber: .62 Miquelet Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
