Antique WATERS U.S. MODEL 1836 DRAGOON .54 SOUTHERN CONVERSION Pistol
Pre-MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Perc. Pistol Dated 1837
Description: Antique WATERS U.S. MODEL 1836 DRAGOON .54 SOUTHERN CONVERSION Pistol Pre-MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Perc. Pistol Dated 1837 Here we present an antique Asa H. Waters U.S. Model 1836 Percussion Pistol, made in 1837. This pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and had a period conversion as the new percussion technology developed. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. Combined, the production totals were 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848) and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in this percussion converted format. The lock plate is roll-stamped with an eagle head above "A. WATERS/MILBURY. MS./1837" in three lines. There is a single letter “M” inspection mark also on the lock. Many of these were lost to attrition during the various conflicts listed above, and many were converted for use, as is this one, by the North & South during the Civil War. The overall condition is good. This formerly flintlock pistol received a commercial style percussion conversion, much like what came out of the confederacy during the American Civil War. It has a small engraved hammer and a drum style bolster. Flash pan and frizzen assembly were crudely removed with no effort to fill in the holes. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock shows a very faint cartouche on the left stock flat. The initials “J. P.” have been carved into the left stock flat. There is a stamped “Q” visible on the side plate and on the front of the trigger guard tang. The rear of the trigger guard tang is marked “Z”. Both of these letter designations were used to denote captured and collected arms for the south during the war. The stock shows use and has a immobile crack in the grip and under the ramrod. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
