Up for sale and just acquired is this very nice 19th century artifact which would make a very interesting “coffee table” discussion piece. A classic piece of 19th-century British firearms craftsmanship . This over/under percussion Pistol
is likely British, mid-19th century (1830s–1850s), percussion over-and-under configuration, round, smoothbore, each fired separately via double hammers or a rotating striker. Approximately 9 inches overall . common in personal defense or dueling pistols.
The specimen is unmarked as to maker but has British proofs, likely Birmingham or London, with crossed sabers. It has a decorative frame engraving typical of mid-19th century civilian arms, often scrollwork or floral motifs. The teardrop-shaped grips were common in small pistols of this period and this one is sound except for a sliver missing from the left side.
The pistol has been cleaned at one time of surface rust and shows “scattered pin prick patina” overall. Unmarked pistols were common — many were produced by "cottage industry" gunmakers, small workshops or subcontractors in Birmingham who didn't always sign their work. The past owner placed this pistol in a later wooden case — not original to the pistol but aesthetically pleasing and it shows well. An antique curio it can be displayed “as is” but with not much effort the left side of grip can be restored making this a more valuable piece.
