Stately Engraved Brass Hardware with Dragon Side Plate

Here we present an antique engraved Philippe de Selier made circa 1700-1720 in Paris, France. De Selier was known to have made fine quality flintlock pistols, sporting rifles, and military fusils. This pistol is a fairly large sized flintlock and could have been tucked into one’s belt while traveling the countryside. Its barrel is 9 inches in length with a .63 caliber smooth bore. There is a lot of brass on this pistol to include the lock plate, pommel, trigger plate and guard, ramrod tube, barrel tang, thumb plate, and side plate. The side plate is cast and then engraved in the form of a dragon. The top of the barrel is marked thrice with a crowned “PS”. The lock is nicely engraved with floral designs and a sawtooth border. Beneath the flash pan is engraved the maker’s name: “PHILIPPE DESELIER”. The stock is carved to accent the hardware of the pistol.

This pistol would have primarily been intended for use as a self-defense firearm or martial weapon. France had several conflicts during this era including the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was an early 18th century European war, triggered by the death in November 1700 of the childless Charles II of Spain. It established the principle that dynastic rights were secondary to maintaining the balance of power between different countries. Related conflicts include the 1700–1721 Great Northern War, Rákóczi’s War of Independence in Hungary, the Camisard revolt in southern France, Queen Anne’s War in North America and minor struggles in Colonial India. Though not on the European mainland, this would have been during the time of the Jacobine Rising of 1715. Quality firearms like this one could see continued use for decades, so it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility that this would still have been in service during the French and Indian War of the mid-18th Century.

The overall condition is very good. Very nice, glassy smooth and crisp action. Bore is smooth and in good shape. The stock lost a sliver under the lock plate and has some filler on the front side around the pommel. A 4” section of the forestock has been replaced a while ago. This is a stately pistol from early-18th Century France, from a quality maker, during an eventful period of history to say the least!
