Fine Napoleonic War Period French Charleville Model 1816 Flintlock Pistol
The French Model 1816 flintlock military pistol manufactured at the Charleville Armory (Manufacture Royale de Charleville) in 1822 is one of the classic arms of the Bourbon Restoration period. These pistols were the standard French cavalry sidearms after the Napoleonic Wars and represent the final generation of French military flintlock pistols before the adoption of percussion ignition.
The Model 1816 was officially adopted after the restoration of the French monarchy in 1815. Although France had already produced the famous An IX and An XIII cavalry pistols during the Napoleonic era, the 1816 introduced several refinements although maintain the original .69 caliber.
This specimen is all original and in fine condition and  manufactured at the Charleville Armory in 1822. It has very sharp markings on the lockplate and multiple cartouches in the stock. The stock is very sound and the metal fine as well with sharp markings and a pleasing patina. There is just a slight discoloration on one side of the grips perhaps from handling or just a shade difference in the wood itself. The pistol dated 1822 falls into the early years of Model 1816 production and was made during the reign of Louis XVIII, only a few years after Napoleon's defeat.
Many surviving Model 1816 pistols were converted to percussion during the 1840s and 1850s. An untouched flintlock example is considerably scarcer and more desirable than a converted specimen.
The completely original flintlock pistol has matching components, no repairs , original ramrod , no replaced parts and excellent markings.
Original French military flintlock pistols in this condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate because many were later converted to percussion or have suffered refinishing.
For collectors of Napoleonic and Restoration-era French military arms, it is a very desirable piece.
