Rare Bergmann 1897 No. 5 pistol, #101, Matching Stock, ANTIQUE, PCA-142
Description: The Bergmann 1897 No. 5 pistol stands as a testament to the innovative firearm design of its era. Crafted by the prolific German engineer Louis Schmeisser, this semi-automatic pistol introduced remarkable advancements for its time. Chambered in 7.8mm Bergmann, it offered reliable firepower while its locked breech action ensured smooth cycling and proper function of the high velocity rounds. Another distinctive feature was its detachable box magazine, a pioneering concept that allowed for rapid reloading—a significant departure from the typical revolvers of that era and Bergmann's earlier models. The Bergmann No. 5 boasted a sleek, ergonomic design with finely detailed craftsmanship, showcasing the blend of functionality and aesthetics. The Bergmann 1897 No. 5 pistol not only played a role in the evolution of firearm technology but also left an indelible mark on the history of weaponry. Fewer than 1,000 were assembled, some authors citing approximately 800, relatively few surviving to this day. This standard configuration Bergmann 1897 No. 5 has a horizontally adjustable front sight and vertically adjustable rear sight, graded from 1-1000 meters. Two line address on bolt cover with serial number on right side of frame above trigger guard. Crown/C/U proofed. Factory rust blued with small parts finished with a mixture of straw and fire blue. Fitted with black hard rubber grips having a "B" in an embossed oval over a finely checkered field. Complete with 2 magazines, 1 of which is a replacement, and factory matching shoulder stock, leather arguably re-covered. Synopsis: Scarce and highly charismatic Bergmann No. 5, the most striking of Bergmann's semiautomatic pistols, designed in hopes of securing a military contract. Bergmann's first locked breech pistol, one of the first of its genre, this model with a horizontal locking system, and one of the first guns to have a staggered double column magazine! Condition: VG+ with fading of rust blue and heat treated small parts in the expected areas. Comparable condition grips. Primary magazine, re-blued, with fire blued floor plate; comparable condition replacement magazine with numbered floor plate (not photographed). Near excellent stock, missing cleaning rod, with aged appearance of leather now consistent with the overall appearance of ensemble. Pistol a tight/perfect fit to the lug with no wobble. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. A phenomenal steampunk pistol, one of the first locked breech semi-automatics, this example particularly interesting in having a factory matched shoulder stock. ~~Insured shipping fee of $155; most packages shipped using FedEx 2nd Day.~~ SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Bergmann Serial Number: 101 Caliber Info: 7.8mm Bergmann |
