Unlike most French Gendarme Model an 9 flintlock pistols we have seen, this one was manufactured at Charleville rather than Maubeuge. It is the first model Gendarme pistol that dates to the end of the 18th century. The overall length is approx. 10"". The 5"" round 60 caliber barrel has a good smooth bore with medium roughness. All the metal parts are bright with areas of brown spotting and discoloration. The barrel, which is totally round without the breech facets of the Maubeuge pistols, has an M and two other unreadable characters on the left side. The barrel tang is unmarked. The lock is marked Manufacture over Charleville. The Maubeuge pistols have a round cock and round brass pan while this pistol has a flat cock and faceted iron pan. There are no inspection and mating marks on other parts. The stock is good with sharp edges, no chips or cracks, no inspection marks, and light issue wear. It is equipped with the correct ramrod. The action functions correctly. This is the only Charleville French an 9 first model Gendarme flintlock pistol we have seen.
