Self-Defense Pistol Made Circa the 1820/30s in Liege

Here we present an antique Dutch/Belgian Flintlock Self Defense Pistol, made circa the 1820/30s in Liege. Today we know that Liege is a city in Belgium, perhaps most famous for its centuries of arms manufacture; but at this time, Belgium was not yet independent, and was a parcel of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands until recognized in 1839. Revolution and the push for independence began in earnest in 1830.

This pistol features a massive .75 caliber man-stopping bore, typical of a military small arm of the period. The top of the barrel is marked with a Liege proof. This would have been made primarily for self defense in the busy streets of Liege, London, and Paris in the tumultuous times of the early 1800s, or possibly carried into battle after being privately purchased by an officer or an enlisted man.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Mostly solid stock with a bit of a crack on the left side near the muzzle. Ramrod replaced. This example has been nicely refinished. Liege proofed barrel. The included ball measures approximately .70 caliber.
