British Flintlock Pistol
Description: NSN, .65 caliber, 12 3/8” octagon barrel with a dark, lightly pitted bore. This is a rather attractive and well-proportioned pistol that has an overall mottled gray patina along the barrel and engraved British lockplate. The barrel has original, crisp British engraving at the tang, with later-applied, brass-filled abstract engraving added to the top facet. The lock itself has a later added geometric pattern under the pan, while the rear of the plate has original stand of flags motif remaining. There is some dark freckling and pinprick pitting, most on the pan and frizzen, while the swan-necked cock is a later, unadorned replacement. The walnut stock itself has been lightly sanded and has a re-applied oil finish over light handling marks and minor bruises including some general softening of the deep relief carving and checkering on the butt. The brass fixtures are later additions, and have a cleaned bright yellow-ochre patina with a deep relief martial panoply on the trigger guard bow, and on the butt cap. The mechanism requires attention and the hammer does not cock, and the wooden ramrod is missing the tip finial. This is still a handsome, British-made flintlock pistol, and is in fair-good condition overall.
