ENGRAVED Antique European J. SHEATH Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS “Dragon” PISTOL
The Original Stagecoach and Naval Ship Boarding Gun
Description: ENGRAVED Antique European J. SHEATH Flintlock BLUNDERBUSS “Dragon” PISTOL The Original Stagecoach and Naval Ship Boarding Gun Here we present an antique Engraved J. Sheath Flintlock Blunderbuss Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s likely in Europe. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel flared at the muzzle and frequently throughout the entire bore and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range. A blunderbuss in handgun form, as is this example, was called a Dragon, and it is from this that the term “Dragoon” evolved. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for naval boarding or defending vessels by pirates and navies alike! This style of pistol came into vogue in the mid to late-1700s. The captain of the U.S.S. Constitution (you may know that fine old ship as "Old Ironsides") owned a pair of these in a cased set. The overall condition is good. Good bore. The markings are clear. This example has a smooth brown patina. Full cock does not engage, but the half cock notch does. Solid stock/grip. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6-1/8 inches. Caliber: Approximately .68 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1800 #247701 SOLD Antique: Yes |
