Engraved French Flintlock Traveling Pistol by Benoit Dumas of St. Etienne
Description: NSN, .60 Caliber, 12 1/4" octagon breech barrel with a good bore that has light-moderate pitting along its length. This is a very handsome pistol that has an overall bright, pewter gray patina along the exposed metal, with scattered spots of dark freckling present throughout. The lockplate and lock components have sparse, but attractive geometric and floral scrollwork engraving, including a boar’s head with bow, arrow, and quiver on the rear point of the lockplate. "BENOIT / DUMAS" is neatly engraved on the lockplate just ahead of the cock, and there us a slightly raised flat panel that runs from the German silver front sight bead all the way back to the breech. There is an attractive, elaborately embellished sideplate, and a pierced decorative escutcheon on the back of the wrist. The pin-fastened walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered about the thick, dark brown oil finish, and there are some old, now rounded-edged chips missing from the edge of the barrel near the tip of the forend. The wooden ramrod appears to be original and is missing the metal tip. The lock is fully functional and locks firmly at both half and full-cock. Benoit Dumas was a well-known St. Etienne arms dealer who was active in the mid-18th century. This is a very good-near fine example of one of his pistols, and rates very good condition overall.
