Innovative 1795 Flintlock pistol
Description: With bore of .65 cal,and an 8 1/2” round barrel with a moderately oxidized bore, and an impotant innovatove flintlock pistol,. The barrel of this pistol is fitted with a improved touch-hole that was refilled and bored again? The Prosser-marked lock is otherwise completely original to the stock and very finely made. The barrel is mostly gray-brown patina with light pitting overall, no visible maker markings and a small London proof mark on the underside. The proper barrel keys have been lost to the years, now replaced with a crude small nail and piece of a file. The lock is a pleasant smoky gray patina with step at rear, lightly beveled edges and some light bordering and foliate embellishments. The lock hardware is very fine with graceful swan neck cock, waterproof pan and bridled frizzen and is equipped with a sliding safety that also locks the frizzen. The forward lock screw is missing and the fittings are iron consisting of the tailpipe, rather elongated triggerguard, and slim buttcap. The walnut stock is very good with a replaced 3” section along the left side tip, a split at the nose and other small cracks here and there. The grip has nice coarse checkering with small cross detailing, there is a v-notch rear sight but no front sight and a simple iron ramrod is present. The lock is crisp and seems to function well mechanically.. John Prosser was a gunmaker and sword cutler. He was in business from 1796 to 1860. Prosser operated in London, England, first at 9 Charing Cross (1796-1853) and later at 37 Charing Cross (1854-1860). He held appointments as Sword Cutler and Beltmaker to King George III (1795) and King George IV (1827).
