Ketland Surcharged Pistol
Description: In 1795 the federal purchasing in Philadelphia decided to purchase locks from the firm of Ketland and Co. in England. The initial order was for 3000 rifle locks and 3000 musket locks and on all plates …”UNITED STATES” must be neatly stamped”. Later, in 1800, 1551 pistol locks were received from Ketland. Brass and iron barrels were many times purchased from England while the brass guards, butt caps, stocks and other iron barrels were produced locally. These various parts were accumulated in arsenals in the United States and later distributed to several contractors to be made into complete pistols. Many of these pistols went to the U.S. Indian Department to be supplied to the Indian trade. This is one of those pistols. It’s an original Ketland and Co. flintlock with the distinctive curved “UNITED STATES” at the rear of the lock. The Ketland and Co. is only partly legible but the “UNITED STATES” is very sharp. The .67 caliber smoothbore round iron barrel is 9” long and has English proofs. The walnut stock is solid and has been lightly refinished at some point. The quality of workmanship is not what you would expect for a gun to be inspected and accepted by the military, however guns produced for the Indian trade were not held to these standards. The fit and finish of the metal components was not as precise and these pistols were made without butt caps which is more common on civilian pistols. This pistol was probably produced by McCormack or Miles, but I’m leaning toward Miles since the forearm is more reminiscent of his guns. In either case, this is a very nice and seldom seen pistol with an interesting history. LEGAL: No FFL or C&R license is required!
