The Model 1842 percussion pistol was made from 1845 to 1852. The overall length is 14"". The 54 caliber 8.5"" round barrel has a fair smooth bore with some roughness. It is bright with light roughness and WN inspector's mark on the top and JH on the side. The lock, which has a smooth brown patina, is marked US over H.ASTON & CO with MIDDtn over CONN (the Ns are barely visible) over 1851. Only 6,000 of the approx. 30,000 Astons made have this lock marking (dated 1851 or 1852), the majority being US over H. ASTON. The hammer screw is a replacement. The brass butt cap , trigger guard, and band and strap are bright. The captured ramrod is a wood replacement. The stock, with added finish, is good with a small chip at the forward strap screw. The action functions correctly. This is a basic US martial pistol.
