Description: 1855 Springfield pistol carbine The Model 1855 pistol-carbine was intended to be used as a pistol on horseback and as a carbine on foot. It enjoyed a very short popularity as Colt came out with a number of shoulder stocked revolvers, hastening the obsolescence the Springfield pistol-carbine. Many were issued to the 1st & 2nd US Cavalry in the west. A total of 4,021 were manufactured between 1855 and 1857. The first order for 1000 pistols was begun in 1855 but not completed until August 1856, thus "1855" dated pistols are the RAREST. Cal. 58. Bbl. 12" round rifled barrel is fitted with a bridled steel ramrod. The rear of the barrel has "VP" and eagle head proofs. Tang is dated "1855" in front of a two-leaf rear sight. Integral blade front sight with 2-leaf rear sight graduated to 400 yards. A sling swivel is on the front band and a lanyard ring on the butt. The lockplate is dated "1855" behind the hammer and "U.S. Springfield" on the forward portion. The lock is fitted with the Maynard self-priming device and has the eagle on the door. Concave button-tipped iron swivel ramrod. All iron has a bright finish. Brass-mounted American walnut stock is solid showing signs of having a shoulder stock attached. No inspector's markings are visible. The buttcap is stamped with assembly #5. This pistol has the lanyard loop and all internal Maynard tape parts. I've seen (and owned) many Springfield pistol carbines, but this is the only one with "1855" dates and it is in better conditiona than most.
