Antique Custom-Made Damascus Double Barrel .50 Caliber Percussion Pistol
*Unmarked & Likely European in Origin **SOLD**
Description: This is a very cool and unique antique big-bore double-barrel percussion pistol that is totally unmarked and likely a bench-made or custom piece. It has smoothbore Damascus barrels 6" inches in length and measuring .50 caliber, allowing the use of a patched bullet or a load of shot. This was the ultimate self-defense weapon in the pre-cartridge percussion era. The pistol itself is well-made and attractive but has a utilitarian design. The stock is smooth Walnut and is full length to the muzzles. It is nicely shaped and carved, with a flower motif just at the rear of the barrel retaining fitting. The fittings are of hand-forged and shaped brass, with a nicely designed triggerguard ending with an acorn shaped tip, a smooth double-line bordered pistol grip cap, and a single ramrod pipe fitting that designed to appear as two pieces when viewed with the ramrod installed. The 6" inch Damascus barrels are in great shape overall, showing some nice spiraling and have a pleasing brown-gray patina. They are fit to the action and stock with a single pin in the front that passes thru the stock, and a steel fitting in the rear fastened with a handmade bolt that passes down into the trigger plate. The bores in both barrels are in very good shape, free from any bulges, dents, or major pitting. The barrels are not fit with a typical front sight blade nor does it appear to ever have had one, rather the fitting that holds them into the stock has an exagerrated U-shaped channel running down the middle for sighting the weapon. This would be more than sufficient for close range firing, particularly if the pistol was loaded with shot rather than a patched ball. The locks on both sides of the pistol are of typical design for the period, 4" inches in length and just under an inch at the widest point. The locks have 3 hammer positions, all the way down in the fired position, at half-cock as the "safe" position to carry the pistol loaded, and full-cock. Both the half and full-cock notches are fully intact and functional. The hammers themselves are a classic profile with smooth lines, rounded edges, and devoid of any extra ornamentation. This pistol is fit with double triggers, one for each barrel. The front trigger for the right-hand barrel is rather straight and short in length, designed to not obstruct access to the 2nd trigger for the left-hand barrel, which is more curved and longer. Despite it's age everything on this double-barrel pistol is still in good working order, and would probably fire with no problem if loaded properly today! All in all, this is a very cool and handsome antique pistol that very well might be one-of-a-kind. This was the S&W Model 500 of it's day, a genuine "hand cannon". It would make an excellent addition to any antique weapons collection or a superb decorator piece to display in your study, living room, office, or "man cave". As an antique, this neat piece can be shipped directly to your home, no FFL needed.
