Peanut Deringer marked SLOTTER & CO/PHIL'A Circa 1868-1870
Description:
This piece was made by the Slotterbeck Bros. after they left A.J. Plate in San Francisco, when Henry Deringer Sued Plate for selling counterfeit copies of his guns made by Slotter. This gun is a true peanut, measuring only 5" overall with a 1 1/2" barrel, it was made for J.P. LOWER and so marked on the top flat of the barrel. This was done while Lower had a shop in Denver, CO. The left side has the sunburst but no "P" as that was a Henry Deringer trademark. It is made 95% like a Henry Deringer, as they were still trying to capitolize on his famous style and name. It is fitted with all German silver, which is all original and nicely engraved. The lock is marked SLOTTER & CO. PHILA. ?Much of the orginal blue is remaining on the hammer, lock plate, breech and tang, which is original to this period and style deringer pistol. The wood is sound with very nice checkering in the normal places. This is a rare gun as not many of this size were made as well as having the Dealership J.P. LOWER marking. The barrel has some blue finish remaining in places and WART/STEEL is stamped on the right side of the barrel. The Slotters advertised their guns as superior to other Deringers as the other guns were made in wrought iron. See picture from my book "The Deringer in America" Volume I, page 220.
