Rare- 44 Caliber Model 1860 Colt Army C&R Revolver

Offers considered. Rare 44 Caliber Colt Model 1860 C&R (cleaned and repaired) revolver. According to Charles W. Pate's definitive work, The Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver", during the period 1867-1869, US armories "cleaned and repaired" between 1000-1500 US marked Colt Model 1860 Colt Model 1860 Army revolvers using parts from non-functional guns held over from the Civil War.  These revolvers were issued to newly formed cavalry units fighting the Indian Wars, including many sent to the 10th regiment populated by the famed Buffalo soldiers. Given a probable 10-15% survival rate of Civil War revolvers, it is likely that only about 150 of these US marked C&R Colt revolvers still exist. This listed revolver has all of the characteristics of a true C&R revolver, as noted in Pate's book: the trigger guard is marked US, without periods, in the same manner as other known C&R pistols; there is a buffing line on the frame just under the recoil shield; the serial numbers on the revolver are mixed (111476 on the frame, 85838 on the barrel, 130100 on the trigger guard, no visible numbers on the cylinder or butt strap); with only the faintist  exceptions, all of the markings on the pistol have been polished off; the grips are rough and ill fitted; and the barrel has been slightly shortened. Regarding its overall condition, the revolver is brown, and the metal is smooth. The right grip has a chip where it meets the frame, there are smaller chips on the left grip. Interestingly, the right grip has on it the carved initals VJ, giving a potential purchaser the possibility of identifying the trooper who once carried it. Despite the rough usage most of these revolvers saw, this is still a good looking gun.
